First question of the interview: "So — tell me about yourself." Where do you start?

With a moment. One scene that shows them who I am at work

With the headline results — where I've been and what moved

By asking what they most want to get out of the next hour

With the shape of my career — the two or three decisions that set its direction

With what I actually do day to day, and what I'm good at

With whatever seems closest to what they're looking for

They ask you to walk through a project you're proud of. Your first sentence is about:

How it worked — the moving parts, and where I sat in them

The people, and how we got them pointing the same way

The choice we faced, and which way we went

Why the project shouldn't have been necessary in the first place

The moment it nearly went wrong

The interviewer pushes back: "I'm not sure that was the right call." You:

Walk them through the constraints I was working inside

Ask what they'd have done — and take the disagreement seriously

Acknowledge it, then find the part where we agree

Go back to the evidence I had at the time

Lay out the options again and show where the line was

Tell them what it looked like in the room that day

They ask about something you have genuinely never done. Your instinct:

Say what I'd want to know before deciding how to approach it

Ask why it matters for this role — sometimes it turns out it doesn't

Point at the closest thing I have actually run

Stay honest and keep it comfortable — nobody expects everything

Tell them about the last time I was this far out of my depth

Ask what good would look like, so I can say whether I've hit it elsewhere

An hour later, the panel is talking about you. What do you want them repeating?

That I'd be easy to have around

The question I asked that they hadn't thought about

That I'd be running it well by week three

Your turn to ask questions. You lead with:

"What does success look like in numbers at twelve months?"

"What kind of person does well on this team?"

"What's the thing about this role you'd rather I didn't find out?"

"Who would I be working with day to day?"

"What's the story of how this role came to exist?"

"How does a decision like this actually get made here?"

The night before. You're most likely to be:

Practising out loud until the stories sound like me again

Working out the two or three points I want to land

Reading up on the people I'll be meeting

Digging out the figures I might be asked for

Writing the questions I want to ask them

Going back over the detail of my own projects

There's a long silence after your answer. You:

Smile and wait — it's their turn

Fill it with more of the specifics

Ask whether that answered what they were actually asking

Offer the other way I could have played it

Add the one detail that makes it land

"So — what's your biggest weakness?" You'd rather:

Give one I've measured myself on, and improved

Something honest that won't worry anyone

Name a real trade-off in how I work, and what I do about it

Tell them about a time it actually cost me something

Push back gently on the question — then answer it properly

Something concrete and fixable, nothing dramatic

What's Your Interview Style?

Two people can give the same answer and land completely differently.
