What does the acronym LASER stand for?

Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

Light Absorption by Spontaneous Emission of Radiation

Low Amplitude Stimulated Energy Radiation

Light Amplification by Scattered Electromagnetic Radiation

Which effect is attributed to low-energy diode lasers in the lecture?

Anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects

Guaranteed eradication of malignancy

Increased postoperative bleeding

Which lasers are given as examples of high-energy lasers in the lecture?

Low-power Gallium-Arsenide only

When the high-energy laser beam is defocused, the lecture says it will:

Produce only visible guidance light

Why can bleeding be reduced by high-energy laser treatment?

It seals blood vessels and lymphatic channels in coagulated tissue

It requires no tissue contact in every case

Which of the following is listed as an advantage of laser use?

Increased postoperative swelling

Need for skin graft in every case

Reduced bleeding during surgery

Inability to decontaminate periodontal pockets

According to the lecture, laser use may help with:

Bacterial control and periodontal-pocket decontamination

What protection is recommended for eyes in the operating room during laser use?

Laser-protective glasses specific to the laser wavelength

No protection if the beam is pulsed

A face shield alone in all cases

Why does the lecture recommend non-reflective instruments during laser surgery?

To increase reflection toward tissue

To prevent reflected laser light from injuring the operator's eyes

What is recommended to reduce exposure to surgical smoke or laser plume?

Smoke evacuation using a vacuum

What serious hazard can occur if a laser damages an anesthetic endotracheal tube?

Ignition of anesthetic gases within the lungs

Ice crystals formed during cryosurgery contribute to cell death by:

Disrupting cell membranes and contents

Vascular damage during cryosurgery contributes to:

Scar-free healing in every case

During the described cryosurgery technique, the probe is usually applied for about:

10 seconds in every oral lesion

After switching off the cryosurgery machine, what should happen?

The probe should be forcibly pulled away immediately

There should be a rapid thaw and the probe is released

The lesion should be heated continuously

The area must remain frozen for an hour

For vascular lesions, the cryosurgery effect is enhanced by:

Compressing the lesion with the probe to decrease blood flow

Avoiding contact with the lesion

Which is listed as a use of cryosurgery?

Ablation of warts and small benign tumors

Routine cutting of tissues like a scalpel

According to the lecture, large haemangiomas should generally be treated by:

A single freeze-thaw cycle only

No cryosurgery under any circumstances

Cryosurgery may be used for trigeminal neuralgia because the nerve can be blocked without:

The secondary neuralgia often following nerve section, avulsion or alcohol blocks

Any need for clinical experience

Cryosurgery is described as useful after curettage of which lesions to reduce recurrence?

Odontogenic keratocyst or central giant cell granuloma

Why may liquid nitrogen spray be preferred for treatment of a bone cavity after curettage?

It produces a faster and deeper freeze

It avoids the need to protect soft tissues

Which is listed as an advantage of cryosurgery?

Guaranteed absence of recurrence

Ability to cut tissues precisely

Which is a listed advantage of cryosurgery concerning bone?

Complete removal of all bone structure

Increased bone destruction in every case

No ability to treat bone cavities

What is one disadvantage of cryosurgery?

The whole lesion is always available for histopathology

Postoperative edema may threaten the airway

Why may lesion recurrence occur after cryosurgery?

The extent of tissue destruction is difficult to assess

The lesion is always completely visible during freezing

According to the lecture, cryosurgery is generally not preferred for malignant and premalignant lesions because:

It cannot produce low temperatures

Dysplastic changes may be potentiated and tumor growth may be accelerated

It always causes heavy bleeding

It always prevents histopathological assessment by laser
